The ambiance was vibrant, but L’s instincts screamed in discord with the lightheartedness that enveloped the charity event. With a glance to his left, he noticed Hanako’s determined face, her confidence radiating like a beacon amidst the chaos. Just as the musician host initiated a round of applause, a low murmur passed through the audience. ‘Keep your eyes peeled,’ L whispered to Hanako, who nodded but felt the weight of uncertainty.

Matsuda, his heart thumping loud against the backdrop of music, chewed his lip as he caught Aizawa’s attention. ‘What do we do if he strikes now? The crowd—’

‘We trust the plan,’ Aizawa said firmly. ‘But this host needs to be watched. He seems… off.’

Suddenly, the lights dimmed again, a flicker that sent chills through the crowd. The musician’s laughter echoed, now unnervingly sinister. ‘Let’s ramp up the excitement!’ he enthused, but L’s suspicion intensified.

‘He looks like he’s enjoying more than just hosting,’ L muttered, scanning the crowd for distractions, his mind racing through possible scenarios. Instantly attuned, he called Matsuda, ‘Check the sound system—make sure there’s no unseen interference.’

As Matsuda skirted towards the back, Hanako gestured toward a couple caught in an embrace, their intimate moment seeming misplaced. ‘Those two haven’t moved since we arrived,’ she pointed out, intuition guiding her.

Their observation was cut short as the music stopped abruptly, followed by an echoing voice that paralyzed the air. ‘Tonight, we shed light on those who deserve to perish in darkness!’ It was Kira, disguised somehow in the guise of the celebratory host.

Hanako gasped, ‘He’s daring enough to show! We’re too late…’

L’s resolve hardened. ‘Not if we play this smart—and quick. Trust no one.

Before they could surround him, the lights flickered once more, and chaos erupted anew. Attendees screamed in shock, disoriented as L motioned for the team to take action. ‘Cover all the exits! Protect the innocent!’ Their mission took on a new desperate urgency as fluid movements emerged from the back. Shadows swam amidst confusion with disorienting intent.

Amidst this chaos, Matsuda returned, breath heavier than before. ‘Cameron from security—he knows the layout. We can’t let Kira slip away too easily!’

Hanako nodded, overcoming her anxiety with newfound energy. ‘Let’s split up; we need to corner him.’ But before they moved, Kira’s voice taunted through the speakers, seamless yet bone-chilling.

‘You legends of justice cannot save everyone. Isn’t it funny, how trust can be manipulated like puppets on strings?’

Energy crackled in the air, a challenge set in darkness. L’s fingers clenched, his patience growing thin. ‘Matsuda, you’re on lookout. Aizawa, accompany us with Hanako towards the stage; I have an idea to unmask this charade.’

They weaved through people, arriving cautiously at the stage, each step a tug against uncertainty.

As they sent a signal to around them, Aizawa reached for the microphone and began speaking, drawing attention. ‘Ladies and gentlemen, we are in need of your shared vigilance tonight—if anything feels out of place, please inform us.’

Kira’s laughter cut him off, echoing with menace. ‘Do you think they’ll listen to you? Trust is a delicacy, and they feast upon the spectacle tonight.’

‘We’ll see who’s left standing when the lights dim fully,’ L murmured, aligning his strategy with samba rhythms pulsing across the floor.

In one fluid motion, L leapt onto the stage. ‘Kira!’ he shouted, artfully taunting. ‘Your glee is transparent, much like those lives you claim over my watchful eye.’

The crowd grew silent, anticipation hanging like the clarity of glass. The host, unmasked mentally within L’s perception, veered from jovial to ferocious. ‘You’ll never win. The game has already unfurled.’

A bead of sweat trickled down Matsuda’s brow, standing firm against the rising tensions. ‘He thinks we’re outmaneuvered, but we have the truth.’

As Kira moved, preparing a ‘figurative knife’, L locked onto him. His gaze sharpened as he readied the surprise punch, triggering his final defense to catch Kira in his labyrinth. ‘You can’t play games when someone knows the rules. Let’s demonstrate what happens when darkness seeks to deceive.’

In the charged air, an intricate dance began—the chase at the charity event ignited true hope amidst shadows, painting an intricate mural of light against the darkness.
