30 years ago, Lena and her friends—Marco, Sara, and Jacob—spent every summer at Camp Gracewood, where they forged a bond that felt unbreakable. After years apart, a spark of nostalgia ignited a plan for a reunion at their beloved camp.

The moment they stepped through the camp’s old wooden gates, memories rushed back, wrapping them in warmth. Lena took a deep breath, savoring the scent of pine and campfires.

‘Just like old times,’ Marco laughed, tossing a twig into the nearby bonfire as the flames danced to life.

‘And just in time for the campfire stories,’ Sara added, her eyes twinkling. ‘I’ve been saving my best for this moment.’

Jacob, playfully rolling his eyes, said, ‘Those stories still can’t top the time we almost set the dining hall on fire.’ They all chuckled, recalling their mischief.

‘Let’s promise to always keep this flame alive for the generations to come,’ Lena proposed, and her friends couldn’t agree more.

Lena took out a worn-out piece of paper—their old summer pact—and suggested rewriting it together. ‘This time, we include new adventures and memories,’ she said.

As they settled down on the grassy bank, Marco recalled, ‘I miss the canoe races on the lake. How about a rematch?’ Sara, feigning seriousness, declared, ‘Challenge accepted!’

Before long, the group including Lena, Marco, Sara, and Jacob decided to organize the race, splitting into team blue and team green.

The day of the canoe race arrived with the sun beaming down. Laughter echoed as they paddled fiercely, Marco coaching Sara, while Jacob navigated Lena.

‘Look out for the rocks!’ Jacob yelled, pointing to a large boulder ahead. Lena laughed, ‘Don’t blame me if we capsize!’

With just seconds to spare, they avoided the rock, cheering as they approached the finish line. The excitement of the competition rekindled their youthful spirit.

After the race, they gathered around the bonfire, their faces lit by the warm glow and fueled by happy memories. Sara recounted ghost stories, framing each shadow in the night.

‘Why do we always end up scaring the younger campers?’ said Jacob, mockingly. This was their tradition—sowing seeds of bravery and bonds over fear.

As the fire flickered, Lena suggested making a time capsule, filled with notes and mementos to be opened on their next reunion. ‘It’ll be a symbol of our journey,’ she said.

Each friend wrote down their dreams, hopes, and a shared secret from their camp days, placing them inside the capsule—a testament to their enduring friendship.

At the end of the night, as the stars twinkled above them, Marco raised a toast, ‘To friendship, to Camp Gracewood, and to many more summers!’

‘And to always keeping this flame alive,’ echoed Sara and Jacob, clinking their cups.

Suddenly, a loud rustle from the bushes caught their attention. Curious and a bit frightened, they went to investigate.

Emerging from the shrubbery was a young girl, lost and frightened. ‘I can’t find my friends!’ she cried, tears streaming down her cheeks.

‘Don’t worry, we’ll help you find them,’ Lena reassured her, stepping forward. ‘What’s your name?’

‘It’s Lily,’ the girl sniffed, wiping her eyes. ‘I was playing by the lake and wandered too far.’

The realization hit them—this was a perfect opportunity to step into their roles as mentors, the legacy they wished to pass on.

They spread out to search, Lena taking the lead. Soon, laughter echoed again as Lily’s friends were found playing near the old treehouse.

‘We’ll show you our camp, and you can join us for the traditions!’, Marco beamed, welcoming Lily and her friends into their warmth.

That night, as they gathered once again around the campfire with the new campers, Lena knew this legacy wasn’t just about their friendship, but about creating a community.

‘Here’s to our eternal flame,’ she said. ‘May it shine brightly for all.’
