James Herbert Batdorff, a longtime resident of Coos Bay, Oregon, passed away on February 10, 2023, at the age of 85. Born on August 12, 1937, in Marshfield, Oregon, James was the son of Herbert and Edna Batdorff. He grew up in a family of modest means, but his parents instilled in him a strong work ethic and a commitment to serving others. James attended Marshfield High School, where he developed a passion for sports, particularly football and basketball. After graduating in 1955, he went on to attend Oregon State University, where he earned a degree in education. James began his teaching career in the Coos Bay School District, where he taught physical education and coached various sports teams. He was a beloved figure in the community, known for his kindness, patience, and dedication to his students. James was also a devoted husband and father, marrying his high school sweetheart, Sharon, in 1958. The couple had two children, Jim and Julie, and were married for 64 years. James was a member of the Coos Bay Elks Lodge and the Oregon Education Association, and he volunteered his time at various local charities. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and camping in his free time. James is survived by his wife, Sharon; son, Jim; daughter, Julie; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he served for so many years. James’s legacy will be remembered for his tireless commitment to his students, his love of sports, and his devotion to his family. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on through the countless lives he touched. James’s family will receive friends on February 17, 2023, from 2-4 pm at the Coos Bay Chapel. A funeral service will be held on February 18, 2023, at 11 am at the Coos Bay Chapel, with interment to follow at the Ocean View Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Coos Bay School District or the Oregon Education Association.
